Pennsylvania’s self-uniting marriage license allows couples to marry themselves without needing an officiant. For our ceremony, we’re borrowing and adapting some Quaker communal practices that resonate with us:
After we exchange vows, there will be a brief period of silent reflection where everyone can settle into the moment and hold us in your thoughts.
Then, anyone who feels moved to is invited to offer us their words of encouragement, advice, blessing, or simply celebration.
After the ceremony, all guests can sign our wedding certificate as witnesses to our union, making everyone an official part of our marriage!
Please note that sharing aloud during the ceremony is optional and spontaneous, so there’s no need to prepare anything ahead of time! Just speak from the heart if something comes to you. And if you don't get a chance to speak during the ceremony or prefer to share privately, you'll be able to leave us a voicemail in our audio guestbook later during the reception.
This is not a full traditional Quaker ceremony. We're planning to keep the whole ceremony to about 30 minutes, and we'll guide you through everything as it happens. Just come ready to celebrate with us!
